Scenic locations spark new Halloween celebrations

Two new Halloween events came to the tri-town on Halloween night, one at a recognizable spot in Rochester and another at Ned’s Point in Mattapoisett.

The Rochester Women’s Club held a trick or treat event at their building on Marion Road in the late afternoon and early evening. The organizers were inspired by the trick or treat event held at Plumb Corner for many years. The group previously judged the costumes at that event. So when the Plumb Corner event was discontinued, they decided to start their own trick or treat event.

“We want to show families that we get involved in the community,” said Yvonne Benton, one of the organizers.

The women decorated the house for the event and sat outside with a small bonfire and bags of candy. In between trick or treaters they chatted, and even waved over a friendly neighbor walking the dog.

The other new event was also trick or treat themed. The Onset/Marion US Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla opened ground floor of the lighthouse at Ned’s Point up to visitors.

Bill Cody thought of the event after the group opened the lighthouse up to the public for the first time this summer. He said the flotilla had good turnout for the lighthouse tours that they ran, with over 500 people coming for tours, and 30 percent of those visitors coming from out of state.

Many Mattapoisett residents have never been in Ned’s Point, and though Flotilla 63 didn’t offer the full tour on Halloween night (only the chance to stop in on the first floor, see some pirates and get some candy) they still wanted to open the lighthouse to the public.

“We’re hoping to do the same for Christmas,” Cody said.
