Scholarship Committee raffle winner announced, Fall Town Meeting date set

Aug 3, 2016

The Marion Scholarship Committee announced the winner of its raffle at Tuesday night’s Selectmen meeting.

Debra Watson represented the committee and had Selectman Steve Gonsalves draw the winning raffle ticket for three Red Sox tickets donated by Lora Sharpe and Jim Fogarty. The winner was Dave Ellis.

The raffle was a fundraiser for the committee, which was unable to give out a scholarship this year due to depleted funds. The raffle raised $550, which Watson said was just over half of what the committee needs for a scholarship.

“It’s less than what we have raised in previous years,” she said. “But due to the high cost of tuition we voted to keep the scholarship at $1,000, so we really need additional funds.”

This committee has awarded 91 scholarships to Marion residents since it began, but this was the first time it did not award one.

Donations are accepted year round and can be made at the Town House.

The date for the Fall Town Meeting has been set for Oct. 24 at 6:45 p.m. at Sippican School.

Marion has received a Buzzards Bay Municipal mini-grant for $10,924 to finish the Grassi Bog project. The grant, coupled with other funds that have been collected, will be enough to complete improvements that redirect water to prevent flooding. The flooding had drawn ire from abutters due to water encroaching on their property and increasing  breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The new plan has been peer reviewed, and the Selectmen said they are confident it will successfully fix the issues.
