School Committee: Housing development could bring more students

Nov 7, 2014

Sippican School might see an influx of students after a new housing project opens and School Committee members are preparing for that possibility.

On Wednesday night, the committee discussed the importance of finding out how many families with children will move into Marion Village Estates. The affordable housing project is located behind the Brew Fish Restaurant. Currently, 30 apartments are set to open on Feb. 1 with another 30 scheduled to open this spring.

“Unfortunately for this year we’ll have to make arrangements and do the best we can,” said Chair Joseph Scott. “Next year, we can make any necessary changes. The sooner we know, the better.”

Additional students would increase class size, he said.

Superintendent Doug White has requested that Marion Town Administrator Paul Dawson ask the developer to release demographic information when it becomes available.

“It’s very anecdotal at this time,” White said. “As I get numbers, I will pass them on and we will keep up with the latest information.”

In December, a draft lottery will be held for those who applied for apartments. White said after that happens, administrators should know more.

Principal Lyn Rivet said it’s possible that current students would be moving into the project, which would alleviate some budget concerns.

The total project also includes plans for the construction of 36 single-family homes on the 22-acre parcel. Building is slated to begin in 2015.

Member Christine Winters said the additional housing units would affect the district as a whole.

“We have the tendency to focus on Sippican School, but obviously there will be a major impact at the junior high and high school,” she said. We’re really kind of in flux right now. This [project] is hopefully on their radar.”
