School Committee says 'no' to wine on campus
The Old Rochester Regional School Committee has denied a request from Running Brook Vineyard and Winery to participate in the Mattapoisett Farmers Market.
Because the school has a policy against alcohol on the campus, it was up to the School Committee to decide if the company could be a vendor in the market.
Superintendent Doug White said he was concerned about allowing the request.
“They’re looking for people to be able to sample it,” White said. “To think that you have open wine on the premise of the school, it would be one thing if it were never open.”
Several School Committee members were also apprehensive.
“I think it could pose a risk to students,” said Chair Cheryl Hebert.
Member Michelle Ouelette proposed limiting the winery to markets when school was out of session, but ultimately that idea was not supported.
“It’s probably not the right fit because we have policies about not having alcohol on the premises,” said member Tina Rood.
The board voted 5-2 to deny the request with Ouellette and Peter LeBrun in favor of allowing the proposal.
