School Committee sets up special fund for fields, athletic complex

New turf fields may be in the works for Old Rochester Regional High School. On Wednesday night, the ORR School Committee approved the formation of an account to hold donations for improvements to the athletic complex.

Principal Mike Devoll said a group of community members met in 2008 to begin raising funds, but was shut down due to the financial crisis.

“Now approaching 2016, our fields have not improved,” he said.

Another group has risen up to seek funding for the project that may include artificial turf fields for the soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and football fields. Estimates are being sought before donations are requested.

A substantial backer will be needed to get the fundraising underway, said Devoll.

“There’s only so many bake sales we can have in a year. Nickel and diming it isn’t going to happen,” he said.

School Committee member James Muse said some of the funds should be used to get expert opinions on the construction before anything is decided.

Business Administrator Patrick Spencer said the use of the funds would be at the School Committee’s discretion.

“Their job is to get the money and help raise the funds. We’ll be in charge of how we go forward in that,” he said.

The School Committee voted unanimously to approve the special fund.
