School Committee votes to put policies 'in line and online'
If you want to know the policies of the Old Rochester Regional Schools, soon all you'll have to do is visit the district's website.
Currently, all of the policies are organized in one location, a massive five-inch binder with at least a thousand pages in the Superintendent’s Office.
However, on Thursday, the Joint School Committee voted unanimously to use the Massachusetts Association of School Committees’ services to review and post the policies online.
The committee approved the use of the service, which will cost $1,500 for the first year and $3,500 the following two years, along with a $950 fee to host the policy online. The cost will be divided among Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester.
“Over the next two years, MASC would have the opportunity to ask for our documents, review them, and get them online,” said Superintendent Doug White. “They will review our documents and make sure we’re in line and online.”
School Committee member Jim O'Brien agreed with using the association. “MASC is at the top of their game. When schools have high-risk questions, they’re the source that schools go to.”
Keeping up with Massachusetts General Law and making sure the policies are comprehensive is a considerable benefit for local schools, said policy sub-committee member Christine Winters.
The service would not alter the role of the policy sub-committee.
“It doesn’t change anything that we’re doing currently. If anything, it’s another set of eyes that we have,” said Winters.
Another benefit of putting the policies online is that parents and the community can access them.
“It’s important for families and everyone to know what our policies are,” said Winters.
