Selectmen approve license for used car business
On Thursday, Selectmen approved Eric Desrosiers’ license for a new, internet-based used car business, but not without some questions from the man’s landlord.
Under the moniker Eric’s Pre-owned Vehicles, Desrosiers has a maximum capacity of three used vehicles that will be stored at Mattapoisett Self Storage when a space opens up.
Desrosiers’ landlord, Vera Gibbons, was concerned that the new business owner would conduct transactions and work on paperwork from the 10 Captain’s Lane rental home where he lives.
“I’m interested as to where the paperwork is going to be done,” said Gibbons. “He lives on Captain's Lane which is a private road. We would not like to have transactions going on in his house or in his driveway.”
Gibbons owns the homes and property at Captain’s Lane, a private way, and asked Selectmen to prohibit Desrosiers from conducting transactions at any of the houses there.
“He could be driving down and meeting somebody to sign papers, and there’s eight houses there,” Gibbons said. “I want Mr. Desrosiers to stand on notice that if we see cars on Captain’s Lane that do not belong there, his living there could be jeopardized.”
She also questioned if he could conduct business at the storage company.
“Brownell [Mattapoisett Self Storage] did not imply that a transaction could not occur there,” said Selectmen Chair Jordan Collyer. “You can sell a car just about anywhere.”
The cars will not be displayed anywhere, but will be for sale online. Additionally, the address for Desrosiers’ business is a post office box.
Gibbons also asked if there were any other licensed dealers operating with a post office box number. Selectmen responded that there were and two others are Internet based.
Police Chief Mary Lyons said her only concern was the hours of business. Desrosiers agreed to conduct business during Mattapoisett Self Storage’s regular business hours: Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Selectmen approved Desrosiers’ application with the stipulations.
