Selectmen approve tax rate
Selectmen have approved a single tax rate for personal and commercial properties again this year, based on the recommendation of Assessor Kathleen Costello.
The tax rate will increase 2.2 percent or $13 per $1,000 across the board for property owners. Historically the percentage has been 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent.
With 95 percent of the town residential, separate tax rates would decrease the residential rate by 43 cents and increase the commercial rate by $6.50.
“You’re not really saving your residential people, but you really are hurting your commercial base,” said Costello. “In our town it doesn’t make sense to do that.”
Selectmen agreed.
Costello also said the town’s values increased by one percent.
“It speaks to the financial team in this town, to department heads keeping budgets under control,” she said.
