Selectmen to consult lawyers over $33,000 Sprague's Cove issue
The Sprague’s Cove seawall saga continues.
In January, Selectmen were informed that the Army Corps of Engineers was billing the town $33,539 in “mitigation” costs due to an unpermitted seawall built at the cove. Town Administrator Paul Dawson said the “worst case scenario” was that the town would satisfy that fee through means other than a cash payment.
However, on Tuesday, he told Selectmen that would not be feasible. The Army Corps offered to let the town replicate wetlands in another area of town or create new wetlands, both of which would likely cost more than $33,000, according to Dawson.
He said it would probably be more feasible to cut a check, and that the Army Corps agreed to extend the deadline (which passed in February) until after Town Meeting so the funds could be appropriated.
Selectmen opted instead to consult town counsel.
“I personally do not agree with them,” Selectmen Chair Jody Dickerson said of the Army Corps.
“Yeah, no,” said Selectman Steve Gonsalves.
Selectman Steve Cushing agreed with his fellow board members and said they need to seek an “alternative remedy” to the issue.
