Selectmen discuss bike, road safety

There’s a lot of bike-related initiatives in the works in Mattapoisett, and on Tuesday night Bonne DeSousa brought them before Selectmen.

DeSousa, a member of the Friends of the Mattapoisett Bike Path, asked Selectmen to endorse a designation that would make the town’s rail trail part of the East Coast Greenway, a 2,900 mile trail system from Florida to Maine.

Selectmen agreed to endorse the designation, but also said something needs to happen on the bike path to improve safety. Many have complained that cyclists do not stop at the intersection of the bike path and Mattapoisett Neck Road and Brandt Island Road, resulting in several near accidents.

Selectmen asked DeSousa to work on reassessing signage at the area, which they deem to be improperly placed.

“I’ve been on the bike path many times myself. I think the signage and the way things were arranged is probably not appropriate,” said Selectmen Chair Jordan Collyer.

DeSousa said she couldn’t police cyclists, but she did offer a forum for people to discuss the issues.

A municipal pedestrian and bike plan is in the works for the town, and a public info session will be held Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Center School to discuss it.

The discussion will include the bike path but also safety on streets for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

DeSousa also said she would like to partner with Mattapoisett Recreation to improve bike safety instruction, something Selectmen approved of.

“Take advantage of the schools,” said Selectman Paul Silva. “The schools are a perfect place for it.”

Speaking of safety on the roads, Town Administrator Mike Gagne also said he has spoken with people at the state level about having an assessment of the speed zones on Route 6.

“I think the speeds on Route 6 are out of sync with what they should be,” Gagne said.

He was unaware of the last time such an analysis had taken place and said the 40 mph limit in many areas of town seemed dangerous.

Gagne and Selectmen also discussed the possibility of adding sidewalks on Route 6 from Mattapoisett Neck Road to Main Street.
