Selectmen favorable to new 5K race

May 28, 2014

A new 5K is in the works for Mattapoisett. On Tuesday, Geoff Smith spoke to Selectmen about the possibility of hosting a road race in the town.

According to Selectmen, the race would be the sixth in the town.

Smith, the founder of The Sightings LLC, said his company manages races and he would seek a charity as well as sponsors to partner with for the event.

The first race, if approved, would be March 29, 2015 and Smith said he expects 100 to 200 participants.

Selectmen told Smith his next step is to speak with Police Chief Mary Lyons and Highway Surveyor Barry Denham. After clearing a safety plan and race route with them, Selectman said Smith could schedule another appointment with the board.

Selectman said the early date of the race was a good time for the town and that any race encourages visitors to explore Mattapoisett.
