Selectmen set anonymous letter writer straight

Marion Selectman Jon Henry took a moment to school the author of an unsigned letter that questioned the legality of a neighbor tying their sump pump into the town's drainage system.

"Whoever you are out there, Mr. or Ms. anonymous, if you expect a reply, you have to put your name and telephone number on your allegations," Henry said at the Selectmen meeting on Tuesday.

"It would help," Selectmen Chair Stephen Cushing added.

The letter, dated March 9, called out a home on Allen Street for tying their drainage line into the town's drainage system. It questioned whether the town can handle cellar water from a residential or commercial property and expressed concern about whether the catch basin would attract mosquitoes.

Henry quickly clarified on the matter. "The fact is, it was a permitted activity," he said.

Exceptions are allowed in certain areas of town to handle capacity issues, he said.

"It can be done, and it has been done, and that's what was done," he said.
