Selectmen surprised by $600,000 stolen from ORR fund
A $600,000 hack into an Old Rochester Regional bank account came as news to Selectmen this week. The problem wasn’t so much the cyber attack as the fact that it happened in 2011.
A resident mentioned the attack several weeks ago after having heard about it from an ORR School Committee member. Town Administrator Mike Gagne called Superintendent Doug White to ask if it was true.
“Doug explained to me that, at the time, the FBI and Attorney General’s office was notified of the breach,” said Gagne. “The FBI came in and conducted an extensive investigation.”
The FBI recovered all but $34,000 of the stolen money. Insurance has not compensated the school for the loss.
“I find it very disturbing,” said Selectman Paul Silva. “This is taxpayer’s money.”
Although he said the School Committee had authority over the issue, Silva said the towns should have been notified.
Silva added that the town might have been able to help with the breach, and it might have been helpful to know about it so other accounts could be checked.
Gagne also contacted his counterparts in Rochester and Marion. Rochester Town Administrator Rich LaCamera was also unaware of the hack. Marion Town Administrator Paul Dawson has not returned Gagne’s call yet.
