Aug 20, 2012

Applications for the Town of Mattapoisett’s senior work-off program will be available at the Town Clerk’s office in Town Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

They are also available at the Council on Aging at 17 Barstow St.

The applications must be submitted by Friday, September 7. Anyone who has been on the program must complete a new application this year.

The tax work-off program allows town residents 60 and over to work for various town departments and receive a reduction of up to $750 in their property tax bill.

A person has to be at least 60, a resident of town, owner of property which is their primary residence and all municipal taxes must be in good standing. The applicant must also agree to a criminal background check, provide their own transportation and complete an ethics questionnaire.

The program runs November 1 to October 31 and the abatement for work performed will be credited on the following year’s tax bill.

Participants are exempt from state taxes but are not exempt from federal, social security or Medicare taxes.
