Sippican Choral Society performs 47th spring concert in remembrance

They may not all be professional musicians, but the Sippican Choral Society knows the meaning of the old adage, “practice makes perfect,” said president of the Society, Deborah Osuch.

“When you’re a member of this group it’s because you enjoy choral singing with like-minded people,” Osuch said. “We do about nine months of prep work before a show.”

Now in its 47th year, the Choral Society performed “Music of Remembrance” on Friday, April 27 and on April 28 at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church of Marion.

The show is dedicated in honor of long-time chorus member Marc Olson, who lost his battle with cancer in August, as well as in honor of the victims of September 11.

The performance, Osuch said, is meant to be an “uplifting” experience.

“The music itself is not morbid,” she said. “It’s very inspiring.”

The spring concert is one of the two annual performances held by the Society each year. In December, the 81-member chorus performed “Christmas Through the Years.”

Returning to the conductor’s podium is musical director Brian Roderick, who is in his ninth year with the chorus. The nine-piece orchestra includes pianist Michelle Gordon and organist Dwight Thomas.

With Roderick at the helm, Osuch said the group is in good hands.

“Brian elevates us to a level that none of us could do on our own,” she said. “This is our equivalent of a football team. The coach is our director. It’s like a team sport for us. It’s so exciting for us to do this in a polished manner.”

Always prepared, Osuch said the group has already planned their next Christmas performance, and has started work on their 50th anniversary show in 2015.
