Sippican Historical Society acquires Revolution-era shoe buckles

Jul 21, 2016

The Sippican Historical Society has received a pair of shoe buckles that belonged to Rochester-native Major Earl Clapp, who fought in the Revolutionary War.

The historical society acquired the buckles after the Woburn Public Library called and offered them while deaccessioning items from its collection. The buckles are dated to 1776, and are about three inches across each.

Clapp was born in 1741 and was a soldier in the French and Indian War as well. He played a prominent role in his community during the revolutionary years. His first services in the Revolutionary War were Captain of a Company of Minute Men. He was later appointed a major in the Army and served during the revolution.

Residents who are interested can visit the Historical Society museum on Saturday mornings to view the buckles.
