Sippican Lands Trust is currently working to make a trail that will be accessible to all people.

Fundraising is underway to build a boardwalk on the Osprey Marsh trail on Point Road.

“It will be accessible for wheelchairs and blind people because it will have side rails,” Lands Trust President Kate Ross said. “The thought is to make it accessible for someone who couldn’t make it on a typical trail.”

The organization has already met with the Conservation Commission and has gone through the permitting process. Now, it’s just a matter of raising the money.

“We’re still working on final numbers, but the campaign is for $400,000,” Ross said. “Some of that is thinking ahead and including some future maintenance and upkeep.”

In order to raise that kind of money, Ross said the Lands Trust will rely on a variety of sources, such as private donations, public grants and Community Preservation money from the town.

“We’ll definitely do some events [to raise money],” she said. “It’s going to be a community wide effort.”

Putting a boardwalk at Osprey Marsh is part of the organization’s initiative to get more people outside and onto SLT properties.

“One of the things we’re trying to do is encourage people to get out and use the land,” Ross said. “We live in such a beautiful area, and on top of that, it’s healthy. It’s a beautiful piece of property and the end of the trail has waterfront views.”

Currently, there is no hard date to start construction, but the organization is excited to continue fundraising and moving forward.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” Ross said. “I would love for people to get out and really use the land. Take a deep breath and take in the fresh air and nature.”
