Sippican Lands Trust, Tabor Academy enjoy successful collaboration
Over the past year, the Sippican Lands Trust and Tabor Academy have worked together in an ongoing environmental collaboration on the trust’s properties.
Coordinated by SLT Executive Director Robin Shields and Tabor’s Director of Community Service Lauren Boucher, students from Tabor worked on properties across town through the academy’s community service program.
Shields said SLT Head Steward Yelena Sheynin has been able to get a lot accomplished in a relatively small amount of time with help from students.
In particular, Tabor volunteers have focused their attention on the Williams Wildlife property, which is located next to Tabor property on Front Street.
Although Williams is a relatively small 6.7-acre parcel, it houses critical wildlife habitat and also has a brook draining into Sippican Harbor that serves as a natural filtration system, said Shields.
Next fall, Tabor students will continue to help implement the SLT’s management plan for the site to both eradicate invasive plant species and reintroduce native vegetation over time.
