Sippican School celebrates Seuss

Mar 2, 2015

If Dr. Seuss were here, he'd be one hundred and one, but even with him gone, kids at Sippican School can still have lots of fun.

Celebrating Seuss's birthday is a national affair, and each school gives it its own particular flair.

On Monday morning, the kids were atwitter to celebrate the rhyming world's heaviest hitter.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 and Thing 3 and Thing 4 helped to decorate every classroom door.

Some even skipped recess to help decorate, but don't worry, parents, for lunch they were not late.

Across Sippican School Theodore Geisel was coming out of the seams.

Mrs. Riquinha's group of 15 read "The Cat in the Hat" and then took rhyming to extremes.

With crayons in hand, the kids learned words that would make a feline swoon. They recited cat, mat, hat, bat and pat ... all before noon.

Mrs. Medeiros used the same favorite book, but her Seuss activity took on another look.

The kids in the class made hats in red, white and blue, all to mimic Thing 1 and Thing 2.

Geisel's contribution to literature was beyond measure. For many kids and adults, the books are a treasure.

Seuss's simple rhymes gave children's books merit. Forget Dick and Jane, said librarian Jessica Barrett.

Easy sentences and, of course, the rhyming, help kids learn to read and develop comic timing.

"The kids can access a lot of his books," said kindergarten teacher Mrs. R.

Yes, when it comes to reading, Dr. Seuss can take them far.
