Sippican School, Cumberland Farms team up for fundraiser
Buying a Chill Zone at Marion's new and improved Cumberland Farms might just go towards buying a local student a new textbook.
On Wednesday, August 22, the Marion School Committee approved a fundraiser for the Sippican School and the Cumberland Farms on the corner of Route 6 and 105.
For every tea, coffee or Chill Zone purchased at the convenience store over the next four weeks, 20 cents will go directly to the school.
Principal Lyn Rivet said the Cumberland Farms representatives anticipate that the fundraiser should raise $1,000 for the school to use towards student programs and supplies.
In return, Rivet said she and eight students will attend the grand opening of the newly constructed building on September 5.
The committee members supported the fundraiser, except for Vice-Chair Christine Winters. Winters said she was concerned that encouraging students and local residents to purchase sugary and caffeinated beverages may send the wrong message.
"I think there's a disconnect here," Winters said. "This runs counter to what we tell the kids about eating healthy. Given the message we're sending at the school, it doesn't sit right with me."
Despite Winters opposition, the fundraiser was approved by the committee.
