Sippican School gets new security cameras, fuzzy feet and more
The Marion School Committee showed off the improvements to Sippican School on Wednesday night before its first meeting of the school year.
Facilities Director Gene Jones led the tour, which began with the new security cameras.
The cameras were installed in the hallways and have a motion sensor, meaning they will record any time movement is detected. The cameras also have zoom capability and 30-day storage.
Throughout the tour Jones also pointed out new flooring on the ramps and entrances around the school.
Many of the changes at Sippican School were made to improve air quality in the building after a study last spring found some issues.
Mike Feeney, from the state Department of Health, reported at a committee meeting in June that many of the issues came from poor ventilation. To fix that, the facilities staff cleared a five-foot buffer around the school to reduce natural irritants getting in. They also added new ventilation around the building.
Inside the school, 4,696 “fuzzy feet” were placed on the bottoms of chair legs. These feet make it easier for the chairs to slide and eliminates the need for tennis balls on the bottom of chairs. Jones said the tennis balls contain latex that contributed to poor air quality.
Another noticeable difference for staff, and one that was suggested by Feeney, was that teachers and staff have the vents in their classrooms completely cleared of papers and other materials.
“The staff has been working well with us to keep the vents clear,” Jones said.
In the cafeteria a change has been made to reconfigure the lines in order to help move kids through more efficiently and to give them more time to sit and eat.
Jones also showed the solar-powered greenhouse that went up at the end of June.
“The building keeps getting better every year,” he said.
