Sippican School students sponsor spirit day for marathon victims

Nicole Radke’s fourth grade class was shocked when their impromptu fundraiser for Boston Marathon victims resulted in $1,057 donations, including $5 of tooth fairy money.

On Friday, April 26, students burst through the front doors of Sippican School wearing the colors of the Boston Athletic Association, Boston sports jerseys, and with “Boston Strong” painted on their faces.

The Boston Strong Spirit Day, a fundraiser for the One Fund Boston, came together in only two days. After returning from their spring vacation, Radke said the topic of the marathon bombings was something she and her students discussed.

“There was still some sadness hanging in the air,” said Radke. “Most of the reaction I got from [the students] was: ‘What can we do?’”

Radke, a two-time runner of the Boston Marathon, said she and the kids felt a strong connection to the event.

Fourth-grader Sabrina Sheldon said she wanted to ask the suspects, “Why would you do that to innocent people, and why would you want to hurt an 8-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy?”

Instead of just being sad, the class decided to raise money from their fellow students and donate it to victims in need.

“There was 100 percent commitment and involvement from each and every kid in the classroom,” said Radke. “It was pretty amazing how the class pulled together and worked with such a positive spirit.”

The kids made announcements over the intercom to tell students and teachers about the event, and also spent their recesses making posters to display in the hallways.

On Spirit Day, Radke and her students visited classrooms to collect donations. Sabrina said she expected to raise $200 from the whole school, but the first bag of donations from the kindergarteners surprised everyone.

“It was over $200. I realized we’re doing something pretty big here,” Radke said.

Kids unloaded their pockets, brought in savings, and gave extra lunch money to the cause. Some parents also sent in check to help.

“One first-grader said he wanted to give his $5 that he got from the tooth fairy,” said Sabrina.

As part of their math lesson, the students counted all the money four times.

When she took it to the bank, said Radke, “They were right, down to the last penny. They were so careful.”

The final total of $1,057 was shocking not only for the fourth graders, but for all of Sippican School.

“A lot of people came up to me and asked how much money did you raise,” said Tucker Figueiredo, one of the “Radkids.” “When I said $1,057, their mouths dropped.”

Radke will send the donations to One Fund Boston along with a photo of the students and a letter signed by all of them.

She said she hopes the kids will see updates of the survivors and know they’ve helped. “It’s probably the most important thing they’ve ever done, definitely within the fourth grade.”
