WITH SLIDESHOW: Marion celebrates 65th annual 4th of July Horse Show

Jul 4, 2012

More than 60 horse riders came out to Washburn Park on Wednesday to prove who was the best in show.

The Marion 4th of July Horse Show saw competitors ages six and up compete in a day-long event that has been a tradition in town for 65 years, said Horse Show Committee member Faith Perkins.

“I’ve been a horse lover my whole life,” Perkins said. “I used to go to this show when I was kid.”

Perkins, a lifelong Mattapoisett resident, said most of her fellow committee members would agree with her.

“I think that’s why all of the committee members are here, because they want to see it continue,” she said.

Judges broke down the riders’ performances based on how well they were able to maneuver around the ring and how well horses and riders worked together.

This year brought new trail classes in a second ring where riders were put to the test in an obstacle course. Each competitor was scored based on how well they could maneuver around the course.

Alex Lowe of Falmouth said she was excited for her 10-year-old horse, Hans, to compete in his second show.

“It’s nice to give him a new experience,” Lowe said.

As for the pressure of competition, Juliana Marchetti of Bridgewater said that after five years of riding, she was ready to enter the ring with her horse Hollyberry.

“I’m excited and scared at the same time,” she said. “But it’s fun.”
