Slideshow: Marion Village 5K draws over 400

Jun 23, 2012

A few raindrops and lots of humidity did nothing to deter the 16th annual Eastern Bank Marion Village 5K.

“It’s a nice local race. A lot of people know each other, and it’s a fun family event,” said race chair Chris Adams.

Adams has coordinated the 5K for 12 years and said he expected between 400 and 500 runners for the Saturday, June 23 race.

With 430 on the race route, Adams was not disappointed.

The race began on Front Street at Tabor Academy and made a loop to end back at the start with food, drinks, prizes, and free massages awaiting runners.

“For Marion, it serves as a kick-off for the summer season,” said Adams.

But the event promises to provide more fun for the town in the future. Proceeds from the run will go to the Marion Recreation Department.

In the past funds from the 5K have gone towards new equipment for the little league teams, new fields at Washburn Park and other recreational needs in the town, said Adams.

He hoped to raise $5,000 through this year’s race.
