'Smooth sailing' reported at this year's Country Fair

This year's Country Fair was smooth sailing all the way through, according to Rochester Country Fair Committee member Kelly Morgado.

Morgado gave a breakdown of the fair's success at an October 16 Board of Selectmen meeting.

"Last year," she explained, "We had income of just under $65,000, while we spent over $66,000—we actually lost money." She pointed out that 2016's Country Fair was held on an absolutely scorching weekend, when most people would have preferred to be at the beach; as an added bonus, the weekend was also a sales-tax holiday.

This year, money loss was not the case, as Morgado said the fair, which was shortened from four days to three, brought in just over $68,000 with total expenses of $63,000.

She also noted the extra police presence at the fair this year, many of whom patrolled for speeding cars. "As far as I'm aware, there were none. If there were, we didn't hear anything about it."

The committee is already planning next year's event. "We need to clear $3,500 in admissions to cover expenses," Morgado explained. "We'd like to bring back Thursday night as the opening day again, to help with that, but we need something that will really draw people in."
