Soups on! Church holds chowder cook-off

Nov 3, 2013

No one left hungry from The First Congregational Church of Marion's Chowder and Kale Soup Cook-off.

Saturday night marked the third year of the event.

"It sounded like a good thing to provoke fellowship in our church," said Betty Broom, a member of the Church Life and Fellowship Committee. "And there are so many good cooks in our church that we really have to take advantage of the talent."

Plus, committee Chair Sally Cottrill said the church has a reputation as being the "most eatingist church."

This year, the church's cooks got creative. In addition to the traditional clam chowdah, there was salmon chowder, corn chowder, and a Portuguese salt cod stew made by Brazil native Kelly Horton and her husband Chris.

Kyla Horton, Julia Winters, and Michaela Mattson were the youngest entrants. The friends cooked up a tasty batch of kale soup.

"We got [the recipe] online, but we did our own twist," said Julia.

They were proud of their entry.

"We thought it was really perfect," said Kyla.

Members of the church tested the chowder and kale entries and voted on their favorites. Winners received aprons.

In the kale soup category, Kyla, Julia, and Michaela took first place. Tinker Saltonstall was awarded the second place prize and Phyllis Washburn took home third place.

For chowder, the Horton's Brazilian seafood chowder won first, followed by Sue Mattson's clam chowder and Ruth Cederberg in third for her salmon chowder.
