Space camp is a blast…literally!

Space Camp kids were over the moon on Friday as their model rockets shot hundreds of feet in the air.

Dave Heshion leads the week-long camp, part of Mattapoisett Recreation’s summer programs.

Heshion taught kids about NASA, space stations, and how and why rockets fly.

One activity had kids learning about the planets. Each child chose one and designed an alien with characteristics that would allow it to survive in that particular atmosphere.

“You want the kids to have fun and somehow slide in learning,” said Heshion, who has educated kid about space for almost 30 years.

One of the most memorable parts of the week for Sylvie Benson, 8 was trying on a space suit.

“I like science,” said Sylvie.

Sylvie’s mom Keri Benson said her daughter comes by that naturally.

“We were so thrilled to have this opportunity. We are a very science oriented family,” said Keri. “I used to build rockets with my family.”

As the final activity for the camp, Heshion and his space explorers took to Center School’s playground to test the rockets they had made and decorated.

“On good days, they can go 1,000 feet,” he said. Even with the wind, the launched rockets flew out of sight for several seconds before returning to earth.

The rockets were a visible reminder of Heshion’s mantra to the kids.

“There is no limit to what you can do. Everybody has 'can do' in them.”
