State covid data: Rochester, Mattapoisett now in red, Marion in gray

Oct 22, 2020

Mattapoisett and Rochester are now in the red with eight cases each on the state’s map of coronavirus data released on Oct. 22.

Meanwhile, Marion has remained in the gray with less than five cases.

Municipalities are categorized by the state into colors depending on covid incidence rates (the occurrence of new cases in a population), with gray being the lowest risk and red being the highest risk.

“This designation should be taken seriously as it places the community at high risk for COVID-19 transmission,” the Town of Mattapoisett said in an Oct. 23 press release. “The town is committed to protecting it’s residents during this pandemic, but we ask that everyone do their part to help us in our fight against covid.”

Mattapoisett reported eight cases in the last two weeks, with an incidence rate of 9.8 per 100,000 people over the last two weeks. Rochester also reported eight cases with an incidence rate of 10.1 per 100,000 people over the last two weeks.

Marion has less than five cases with an incidence rate of 3.1 per 100,000 people in the past two weeks.

In Mattapoisett, the first case of coronavirus was reported at Center School on Oct. 21, and the first case in Old Rochester Regional Junior High School and two cases at Sippican School were reported in Marion the week prior.

The town said that it will be working with Mattapoisett businesses to ensure they are compliant with state orders, as well as modifying access to town buildings with respect to the new high-risk designation.

In nearby communities, Wareham remained in the yellow, Acushnet and Westport moved to red, New Bedford and Fairhaven stayed in the red, and Dartmouth moved down to yellow. The state’s coronavirus data map is released every Thursday by 6 p.m.
