State laws impact Rochester's stray dogs policy
The clock is ticking faster for stray dogs to find a home.
Due to new state regulations effective October 31, strays found in Rochester will only be held for a period of seven days prior to placing the animals up for adoption.
Previously, the town was allowed to hold all strays for up to ten days. If owners do not claim the dogs before then, the animals are then put up for adoption or euthanized if a home cannot be found.
Currently, the town houses all stray dogs at the Lakeville Animal Shelter.
Selectman Naida Parker said she doesn’t expect the new policy to make much of an impact. Parker added that the Lakeville shelter has generally been able to avoid euthanizing the stray animals.
“They’ve usually been able to place most of the animals,” Parker said during October 15 Selectmen meeting.
Town Administrator Richard LaCamera added that the arrangement between the two towns has always worked out well.
“They’ve done a terrific job,” LaCamera said.
