Stop, drop and roll: Mattapoisett Fire Department shares safety lessons

Oct 12, 2012

Everyone knows to call 911 if he or she should see a fire break out. Eleven-year-old Mattapoisett resident Jasslyn Hayde also knows there are more potential dangers than just the flames.

“Never breathe in the fumes from the smoke,” Hayde said. “It’s so bad for you.”

With National Fire Prevention Week in full swing, the Mattapoisett Fire Department has a thing or two to show the community about safety.

On Thursday, the firefighters held an open house at the station, complete with food, Sparky the firedog and a few demonstrations on handling a fire extinguisher.

Captain Bob Garde, a 19-year veteran with the department, stressed the importance of community events such as this one that brought out more than 100 local residents.

“We do this every year and we always have a great turnout,” Garde said. “It’s important for the kids to learn fire safety and we get to show off our new fire engine.”

As for the guests, they were able to climb aboard the trucks, use a fire hose and even witness the Jaws of Life in action with a danger-free demonstration.

The demonstration was a favorite among the Cub Scouts Pack 53, said Cubmaster Michele Couto.

“They really loved it all,” Couto said. “It’s great to come out with all of the families. It’s all about being a team.”

As for other important safety lessons, 10-year-old Natali McGrath said she has the biggest one down pat.

If your clothes catch fire, McGrath said,  “Just stop, drop and roll.”
