Students build skills as they construct new shed for senior center

ROCHESTER — Junior and senior students in the carpentry class at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School have completed construction on a new shed for the Rochester Senior Center.

The 16-foot by 24-foot structure was created by the students from the ground up.

The larger shed will help accommodate materials including snowblowers, lawn mowers and personal protective equipment such as masks and sanitizers, said Eric Poulin, director of the Rochester Senior Center.

The building will replace smaller sheds on the property, which were getting “kind of cramped,’’ Poulin noted.

The new shed fits in better with the aesthetics of the landscape, Poulin reported.

The two old sheds will be declared as surplus property.

The new structure is nearly ready to use, and only needs electricity to be installed before it becomes functional.

“I think it’s a great win/win for the town and the students,’’ Poulin explained. The students learn to build a structure, he pointed out, while the town saves on labor costs.

Poulin praised Andrew Daniel, facilities manager for the town, for its support for the project.

“We really appreciate the work the students did for us,’’ Poulin said.
