Students learn about cranberries

Nov 15, 2019

MARION — The Natural History Museum's after-school group hosted Dawn Gates-Allen of the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association for a program on cranberries on Nov. 13.

Participants took a close look at the insides of cranberries to discover what makes them float, counted seeds — which show how many times a plant was fertilized by a bee — and had a chance to see how far they could "bounce" a berry.

Then, students "built a bog" in a cup which they were able to take home to watch how the plants develop roots. If the plants mature enough, students will be able to plant them at home.

The museum’s next program is its Holiday Party on Dec. 11.  Children will work on crafts made from recycled materials and natural products. To register, go to the museum's website: www.marionmuseum.org.
