Students travel out to an island

May 13, 2019

Over the past two Wednesdays the Marion Natural History Museum after school group had an opportunity to visit Bird Island courtesy of Isaac Perry and Peter Bourgault of the Marion Harbormaster’s office.

On the trips, the group observed many terns arriving to this crucial nesting spot, as well as oyster catchers, gulls and one pair of Canadian Geese. Students looked at nesting boxes prepared by the state Fish and Wildlife department and recent improvements made to the island to allow for more usable habitat.

Participants also had a tour of the lighthouse, which is 200 years old this year.
