Summer Soiree gets Old Rochester swim team closer to the water
The Friends of Old Rochester Swimming recently held a Summer Soiree and Silent Auction at the Inn at Shipyard Park to raise funds for the winter co-ed varsity team.
The School Committee approved the new team in June, under the condition that the Friends raise $7,500 by October 1.
The Summer Soiree was another opportunity to keep the funds flowing. Before the event, Friends board members canvassed the community for donations, receiving more than 50 items.
“I am so appreciative of the support, both donations and items for the silent auction, from the community members of our area,” said Friends board member Kathy Downey.
More than 100 tickets were sold for the August 22 event, which helped the team reach its $7,500 goal a month early.
The Friends handed in the funds the first week of school, but are still hoping to raise more money for the team, which will the group will start after Thanksgiving.
“With over 22 student athletes already signed up for Winter Swim, I cannot wait to see the excitement of the team and the community when this dream becomes a reality”, said Secretary Chrissi Feldkamp-Gelson.
