Taber Library to explore renovation options

Aug 3, 2016

The Taber Library Board of Trustees wants to renovate the front of the library, and on Tuesday night they got the Selectmen’s blessing to move forward with the process.

Jay Pateakos, president of the trustees, presented Selectmen with three design options.

The goal of the renovation is to expand the front of the building in response to daily about accessibility, said Pateakos.

The large top step and heavy front doors draw the most ire from patrons who find them difficult to use.

Pateakos also expressed concern about the handicap accessibility only being through the back of the building, so the trustees would like to consider adding a ramp to the front entrance.

The first option he presented was to fix the doors, the second option would be to fix the doors and the steps, and the third option would encompass option two and add a wheel-chair accessible ramp to the front of the building.

“It’s all in its infancy at this point,” Pateakos said, but added that the trustees already have a potential donor. “We’re looking for approval to do a study, and we need a proper donor package with renderings and designs.”

The study would likely cost a few thousand dollars. Pateakos said the library has money set aside for things of that nature and therefore will not need town funds.

Pateakos said the trustees were inspired by the look of the Camden Public Library in Maine and hope to emulate the design of that building.

“We want to beautify it and make it more accessible,” he said.

Pateakos said the trustees have their eye on the third rennovation option.

The Selectmen agreed it was a good idea to explore.

Next, the trustees will pay for a study to look into the three options presented by Pateakos.
