Taber Library pipe clogs, books damaged

Jul 15, 2016

The Elizabeth Taber Library was closed Friday, Saturday and Monday
after a pipe in the Elizabeth Taber Library clogged on Friday afternoon, causing water to pool up and closing the library for the rest of the day.

The water poured down from the ceiling and damaged some of the donated books that were being stored in the basement.

“Not as many books were damaged as I thought, maybe one hundred or two hundred,” Library Director Libby O’Neill said.

She also said that the staff is still trying to dry some of the books out, but O’Neill doesn’t anticipate the annual book sale on July 29 and July 30 will be too heavily effected.

“We’re still in OK shape,” she said.

Last year the book sale had about 3,000 books up for sale.

The book sale is currently the library’s biggest fundraiser. O’Neill estimates the town funds 65 to 70 percent of the library’s budget, and the rest needs to be raised through fundraisers.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said the pipe got backed up because of a clog in the pipe between the street and the building.

The library returned to normal hours on Tuesday after being closed Monday for the Department of Public Works to excavate out front.

The library is asking that residents consider donating some for their book sale.
