Tabor Academy goes country for Hick Day
It was Spirit Week at Tabor Academy last week as the school prepared for its annual all-sport blowout with Holderness School in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
For over 20 years, Tabor has celebrated Holderness Day (called Tabor Day at Holderness), a day of games where every available fall sport team competes.
Chris Millette, Student Activities Director, said the tradition started when the recently retired Headmaster, Jay Stroud moved from Holderness to Tabor.
This year, all the fall teams played except the school's football team, said Millette.
"Over 200 school athletes will go," he said.
In honor of their the rurally situated competition, Tabor students had Hick Day on Thursday. Instead of their usual uniform, the kids donned plaid and flannel, baseball caps and fur hats, overalls and large belt buckles.
A Friday night pep rally and bonfire was the final event before Tabor students headed to Holderness for the games on Saturday.
"Each game, junior varsity and varsity, counts as a victory," said Millette. "It's very competitive."
The overall winner gets to take home the trophy, which has been passed between the schools for decades and currently resides at Tabor.
With five matches won, two lost, and one tied, Tabor celebrated another victory this year and brought the trophy back to Marion.
Below are some of the highlights from the games:
Tabor boys varsity soccer walked away with a 2-1 win; boys junior varsity soccer won 6-0; girls junior varsity soccer won 8-0; girls varsity soccer defeated Holderness 3-0.
In a close match-up with Holderness Tabor’s girls varsity field hockey lost 1-2 in overtime on Saturday. Girls junior varsity field hockey tied with Holderness with a game-ending score of 2-2.
