Tabor Academy holds 'Day of Service'
Tabor Academy students fanned out across the South Coast on Wednesday, April 9 for the school’s twice-a-year day of service tradition.
Students and staff rolled up their sleeves for dirty jobs like kennel cleaning, trash pick up and yard work. Others stayed on campus to teach lessons on Chinese, marine science and art to first grade students from New Bedford’s Alma del Mar Charter School.
Volunteers pitched in at New Bedford’s Salvation Army, Dartmouth’s Humane Society and YMCA and Marion’s First Congregational Church.
Closer to home, students worked on road cleanup, a yearly project done in cooperation with the Marion Tree Committee. This year students focused on the I-195 ramps and sections of County Road and Point Road.
Seven students volunteered at Sippican School’s student garden. Students sanded picnic tables, moved compost and weeded garden beds to prepare the space for spring planting.
On the Tabor waterfront, two advisory groups worked on the Oyster Farm, which is an effort to complement and build on the existing marine science program housed in the Tabor Marine and Nautical Science Center. Two of the main goals for starting an Oyster Farm on campus were to help support the existing Town of Marion shellfish propagation program and to provide marine science students with fieldwork.
Tabor worked with 20-plus South Coast organizations on the day of service. If your organization needs volunteers any time throughout the school year, call 508-748-2000 ext. 2215.
