Tabor girls come in second at championship race
Not only did the Tabor girls cross country team recently wrap up a winning season, but it was also their best on record.
The team lost only one meet in the regular season and came in second place at the New England Prep School Track Association Division 2 championship race on Nov. 9 in Easthampton.
“This year’s team is the best team of the program, so it’s been exciting,” coach Kelli McSweeny said of the historic season.
The team has come a long way in the past four years, from being dead last in the championship race to a few seconds from first place.
Julia O'Rourke of Marion, who came in second at the championship, remembers those difficult years.
"As a senior, it’s been really special to have such a great season," said O'Rourke, a team captain. "We’ve come so far so I think that makes it all the more exciting."
McSweeny said the whole team ran well in the championship race.
The team’s top runner, Julia O’Rourke, took second place overall with a time of 19:00. O’Rourke, Lulu Russell (20:10), Molly Little of Rhode Island (20:20) and Isabelle Rodgers of Colorado (20:28) placed in the top 20 at the championship meet, becoming all star select players.
“What’s really wonderful about our race is that every single girl on varsity got their best time. They couldn’t run any faster,” she said.
O’Rourke, Russell and Rodgers raced in the NEPSTA All Star Cross Country Meet on Saturday in Southborough. O'Rourke placed fifth, Russell in 23rd and Rodgers in 27th.
