Tabor to reopen today

Oct 30, 2012

As Sandy moved toward the area, Tabor Academy cancelled classes on Monday and moved some boarding students to higher ground. But by Tuesday, the storm had passed and the students headed back to class.

Early Monday, students who reside in dorms near the waterfront were moved to dorms further inland on campus. Headmaster John Quirk said the move was made to guarantee students' safety in the event of flooding.

Before Sandy arrived, Quirk said the school will reopen on Tuesday depending on issues with flooding and power outages. The latter of which had Quirk especially concerned.

"If the power stays out for a long period of time it's going to be more problematic," Quirk said.

If the power does go out for several days, Quirk said the school may cancel classes for the remainder of the week and be forced to send boarding students home.

"We have evacuation concepts," Quirk said. "We can either move people from buildings or send them home."

There was some minor flooding in the parking lot behind the Fireman Performing Arts Center, but there was no damage to any of the buildings and the flooding did recede with the high tide on Monday night.

"We had very little damage," Quirk said. "We did move some kids, which went off without a hitch. Now, we are off and running."

On Tuesday morning, Quirk announced that the school was open but that classes would not start until 11 a.m.
