Technology director hire supported by school committee

The Mattapoisett School Committee has given its thumbs-up to a new "technology director" position for the Old Rochester Regional district.

“We have built our infrastructure as far as technology, and without a central person or vision looking forward to all of this, it’s hard to capture the benefits,” school committee chair Gracinda Knox said Monday as the board discussed the proposal. “We have six schools going their own direction.”

The joint school committee raised the idea in late October, proposing that half the $80,000 to $100,000 cost of the post be borne by the junior high and high school, with the remaining half divided equally among the three towns' elementary school budgets.

The next step is to include funding for the postition in all relevant budgets.

Members of the various committees recently visited 12 other districts with technology directors, and Knox said the results were positive.

“If we’re going to ask the town to spend money for new technology in the schools, we should be getting the most we can,” Knox said.
