Thanksgiving comes early for seniors, junior high students

There was much to be thankful for inside Old Rochester Regional Junior High School on Sunday afternoon.

For the 25th consecutive year, eighth grade students served up a Thanksgiving dinner for tri-town seniors, and this year proved to be one of the more generous events.

“We’ve had the best outpouring from the community in terms of donations,” Principal Kevin Brogioli said.

Residents and businesses donated 150 door prizes for the annual raffle. Students raised $500 and also donated time.

“There are about ninety students volunteering to serve, and yesterday many arrived to help set up the cafeteria at nine in the morning when they would usually be asleep,” Brogioli said. “There’s also the unsung clean up crew.”

Dressed in white tops and black pants, students waited on tables, bringing coffee and water before serving up the main entree, a turkey dinner with all the fixings.

Students also worked as greeters, checked tickets and parked cars for diners on a cold, drizzly day.

Superintendent Doug White welcomed seniors and praised students for their efforts.

“This tradition is one of my favorites,” White said. “It brings us all together over great food, refreshments and great company.”
