Things to do: buy books, walk a dog, socialize with vets

Thursday, Aug. 22

Socialize with veterans.

This month’s Veterans Social at the Rochester Senior Center will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Veterans of all ages are welcome to attend this informal gathering. Refreshments will be served, there is no cost and participants do not have to sign-up in advance.

Friday, Aug. 23

Buy books.

Books about military campaigns, from the Aztec Empire to Napoleon to the Vietnam War, will be one highlight of a two day book sale on Aug. 23 and 24 at the Mattapoisett Quaker Meeting, 103 Marion Road. Hours for the sale will be 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Saturday, Aug. 24

Walk a dog.

The town Dog Walk A Thon will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at Center School on Barstow Street. The stroll is a half mile or mile long and can be completed at the walkers’ leisure. The route is walked and water stations are provided for participants. Walkers should donate $20, which will go to the building of a new dog park. There will also be contests and prizes for pooches, and 2019 calendars and t-shirts available.

Celebrate the end of summer.

Join Kay Hanley Alden at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library at 10:30 a.m. for an end of summer celebration with a warm up, ribbon skills, maypole dance and games. This program is recommended for children ages 5 and up. Contact the library to register at 508-758-4171.
