Things to Do: See fire trucks, hear folk music, eat cookies

Thursday, Oct. 10
Decorate, eat the result.

Children of all ages can decorate (and eat) cookies at the Mattapoisett Library. Registration and information about dietary restrictions are required to join the 3 p.m. decorating session.

Friday, Oct. 11
Eat with others.

The Mattapoisett Congregational Church plans to host its next Open Table in its Reynard Hall

There is no charge for the meal, although donations are gratefully accepted. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and supper will be served at 5 p.m.

Watch a classic film.

The Sippican Historical Society and Marion Council on Aging will continue their free classic film series with Hoosiers at 7 p.m. at the Marion Music Hall.

The film follows a big-time basketball coach in a small town. Before the film, there will be music by vocalist Michele Richardson, pianist Truman Terrell and clarinetist Bob Sanderson.

There will also be free popcorn and remarks by David Pierce at the movie’s end.

Saturday, Oct. 12
See a fire station.

The Mattapoisett Fire Department will host children and families from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an open house that will include a live fire demonstration and a car rescue demonstration.

The event will also offer children free pizza, the chance to look at fire trucks and have their faces painted at the fire station.

Register for a cooking class.

Saturday marks the deadline to register for the next teenage cooking class on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. Cooks will be making a simple dish out of Halloween candy.

Explore trucks and boats.

The Lions Club is hosting a Touch a Truck event to benefit the Rochester Fire Department and Junior Firefighters.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. children and families will have a chance to see trucks, boats and heavy equipment, play games, get balloon animals and go in a bounce house at the Rochester Country Fairgrounds.

Food and drinks will also be available for purchase. Admission is $7 per purchase or $20 per family. Children under 12 are free.

Hear a folk band.

The Marion Art Center will host the band The Jethros at 7 p.m. The Jethros were the founders of the New Bedford Folk Festival Southcoast Stage.

Tickets are $18 for art center members, and $20 for non-members. Attendees may bring their own beverages. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Explore pumpkin physics.

Teens can create pumpkin catapults to learn about physics at the Mattapoisett Library at 4 p.m. The catapult that sends a pumpkin the farthest will win a prize and bragging rights.
