Things to do: Workshop with flowers, play tennis, hear history

There are a lot of things to do in the tri-town this week. 

Thursday, June 13

Climb Ned’s Point

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold a light house tour of Ned’s Point from 4 to 7 p.m. Schedule is subject to the availability of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Personnel and weather conditions and may change without advance notice. Children must be 48” tall to climb the 32 rough cut granite steps and 7 foot ladder to enter the lamp room. A tour will also be held Tuesday the 18 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Hear Mattapoisett history.

The Mattapoisett Council on Aging will host a presentation on Henry Huttleston Rogers, who gave the money to found Center School and many other buildings in Mattapoisett, in its third floor conference room.The presentation offers the chance to tour the historic clock tower room, or to attend an Open House for light refreshments after the presentation.

Friday, June 14

Celebrate seniors.

The Rochester Senior Center will be taking a bus trip to White’s of Westport for a Celebration of Seniors. This trip includes breakfast, a resource fair, and speakers on senior-related topics. Admission is free. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. and returns at approximately 1 p.m. Please call in advance to reserve a seat on the bus.

Paint flowers.

The Marion Art Center will host a “floral painting with watercolors” workshop to coincide with its Art in Bloom exhibit. The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.  The price is $35 for members and $45 for non-members, plus a $10 materials fee for paper. Artists should have watercolor experience and bring paints and brushes.

Eat together.

The Mattapoisett Congregational Church will host its last Open Table until September in Reynard Hall. There is no charge for the meal, although the church will gratefully accept donations. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and supper is served at 5 p.m. The church asks that participants wear red white and blue to celebrate Flag Day.

Saturday, June 15

Play tennis for a cause.

The Sippican Tennis Club will host its first charity tournament from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tournament will support the Marion Garden Group’s Town Beautification Project. The doubles tournament is open to sixty participants. The tournament will also feature a raffle with tennis and sailing-related items. Registration is $50. Learn Marion history.

A new walking series will teach participants about tri-town history. The first history walk will take place on June 15 from 10  to 11 a.m. Marion history expert and author of six books, Judith Rosbe, will lead the walk starting at the Sippican Historical Society at 141 Front Street.

Arrange flowers.

The Marion Art Center will host a Your Flowers in Your Vase workshop. Workshop prices are the same as the June 14 workshop, with the addition of a $15 materials fee. Students should bring a large vase and foliage, though there will also be supplemental flowers at the class.

Monday, June 17

Eat food.

Hanna Milhench and her team will prepare a special luncheon at noon. Everyone is welcome to attend, but advance sign-up is required and an anonymous donation of $5 is requested.

Tuesday, June 18

Learn about food.

Community Nurse Home Care will present, “What’s in Season” with Registered Dietician, Barbara Canuel at the Rochester Senior Center at 10 a.m. Canuel will discuss seasonal foods and meal planning on a budget.

Talk books and dogs.

The Council on Aging Book Group will discuss “Following Atticus: Forty-eight High Peaks, One Small Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship” by Tom Ryan at 10:15 a.m. at the Senior Center on Dexter Lane in Rochester.

Hear about a sculpture.

New Bedford artist Eric Durant will speak about sculpting Elizabeth Taber for Bicentennial Park at the Marion Art Center at 5:30 p.m. Space for the event is limited to 70. To reserve a spot, call the Elizabeth Taber Library at 508-748-1252

Wednesday, June 19

Get legal advice.

At 4 p.m., Andrew Bardetti will hold a free presentation at the Rochester Senior Center about options with subsidized housing, assisted living or nursing home rights, the pros and cons of reverse mortgages and homecare programs.

Hear about a reenactment.

The Rochester Historical Society will host Howie Smith of the Wareham Minutemen and Militia and Chris MacDonald of the Lafayette Durfee House, who will present on a re-enactment of George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware. They will speak at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Historical Society's Museum, 355 County Rd.
