Town off the hook for underestimated paving project
Mattapoisett officials have reached an agreement with Tighe and Bond Engineers and contractors that will keep the Mattapoisett Neck Road repaving on track without further cost to the town.
At their April 23 meeting, representatives from Tighe and Bond informed Selectmen that the cost for the project was $43,000 over the original estimate.
The repaving is part of a $6 million sewer project that Highway Surveyor Barry Denham said he wanted to see finished by Memorial Day.
Voters approved a $230,000 appropriation at November’s Special Town Meeting to complete the project, and Selectmen were unwilling to allow the town to incur more cost.
Chair Jordan Collyer met with the contractor, Water and Sewer Commissioner Nick Nicholson, and Tighe and Bond.
“We clearly articulated that the funding we have available presently is all we can pay and all we will pay,” said Collyer.
Contractors agreed to reduce the cost of the project by $35,000, with Tighe and Bond, who miscalculated the cost of the project, funding the remaining money.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said the paving contractor will also honor the per ton rate for asphalt in the original agreement for an additional project on West Hill Road.
“I think everybody worked very hard to work out what was an extremely difficult situation,” said Gagne.
The paving is scheduled to begin Monday, May 13 and Gagne said it should be completed by Memorial Day.
