Town House construction at full tilt

Aug 8, 2011

Construction at the Town House is going smoothly and according to plan, says Town Administrator Paul Dawson. New catch basins and drainage systems are being installed in the parking lot and along the perimeter of the building after an inspection last year revealed extensive mold growth in the basement. A remediation plan was formed and $62,000 was appropriated during a town meeting in May for the work.

The construction happening now is the first in a two-step process: eliminating the source of the mold and eliminating the mold. The second step, however, may not happen until next year, according to Dawson. He said a special meeting would be held in October to ask for the money and determine bids for the project.

“One catch basin collected water from the [Sippican School’s] tennis courts, the baseball field and our parking lot, as well as our downspouts,” Dawson said. “All of that water and pressure is coming into one small pipe that leads to Spring Street. It just can’t handle that.” He also said the work should be completed in two to three weeks.

Construction is currently happening in the parking lot and will then move to the perimeter drains. When all is done, new basins will direct water toward Main Street and connect with the new storm water drainage system.

Dawson also said this is just one of many renovations the Town House has been working to secure for some time. He said the cost of completion for all of the projects desired would total around $5.2 million.
