Town will work with NSTAR on tree trimming

Dec 10, 2014

Tree Warden Roland Cote and Town Administrator Mike Gagne are trying to be proactive to make sure no trees get unnecessarily trimmed by NSTAR.

Cote recently noticed an arborist flagging and putting bands around trees on North Street. Gagne contacted NSTAR who assured him they would comply with all requirements due to North Street’s designation as a scenic way.

“He said they would work with the town and tree warden,” said Gagne.

In Dartmouth, Gagne said Horseneck Road has undergone a “major tree cutting project” that resulted in too much trimming, and he didn't want to see the same thing happen in Mattapoisett.

A hearing with NSTAR and the Planning Board will happen at a future date.

“I think we need to look at each of those trees and determine what the minimum amount is that needs to be cut from the trees,” said Gagne. “We really need to come up with a plan to do a thorough recommendation on each tree in the layout and have good evidence and documentation for the Planning Board hearing.”

Gagne said he and Cote would work with the arborist to minimize trimming.

“We need to make sure what we do is right and it’s not an overkill,” Gagne said.
