Toys for Tots seeks warehouse space nearby

Nov 13, 2014

With the holiday season fast approaching, Toys for Tots is looking for room at the inn.

The Plymouth sector of Cape Cod Toys for Tots is looking for warehouse space in or near Wareham. Bob Graser, Plymouth area coordinator for Cape Cod Toys for Tots, said he needs a place to house and box 7,000 to 10,000 toys this holiday season.

He said last year, the group successfully used the empty storefront in Wareham Crossing formerly occupied by Friendly's, but that space is being used this year.

Graser said he would like to keep the distribution center in the area as most of the volunteers are nearby, such as the Wareham High School JROTC. Graser has also run a collection at Old Rochester Regional High School, where his daughter is a science teacher, for the past two years.

He said the group has given out toys in Plymouth, Carver, Rochester, Marion, Mattapoisett and Wareham as well as to a number of local charitable organizations such as Turning Point, Onset Foursquare Church and the Salvation Army.

Graser, who has been with Toys for Tots for "the last five to six years" said the location would just need lights, heat and space. Ideally, he would be able to find a location by next weekend, Nov. 22 and 23, and the group would be out of the location by the week after Christmas.

If he doesn't find a space nearby, the toys will have to be run through Yarmouth, which puts a strain on the entire group as nearly everyone involved is from the Buzzards Bay area.

"It's a big undertaking, but it's worth it," Graser said.
