Tri-town Memorial Day events
Several Memorial Day events are planned for Mattapoisett, Marion, and Rochester this weekend.
The town of Mattapoisett will commemorate Memorial Day on Monday, May 27.
A ceremony will be held at the Mattapoisett Library at 1:30 p.m. In addition to patriotic songs played by the Old Hammondtown School orchestra and an address from Rep. William Strauss, members of the Florence Eastman American Legion Post will lay wreaths on the war memorials.
A parade will follow with a squad salute at Town Wharf for veterans who lost their lives at sea and a salute at Cushing Cemetery for those who lost their lives on land.
The parade will conclude at the Legion Hall with refreshments for the marchers.
In Marion, members of the Benjamin D. Cushing Post 2425 Veterans of Foreign wars will place flowers on the graves of deceased veterans of all wars on May 25 at 10 a.m. The placement of flowers will start at Evergreen Cemetery and then proceed to three other cemeteries in Marion. Anyone interested in assisting is welcome.
On Monday, May 27, the annual Town of Marion Memorial Day parade and observances will begin at 9 a.m. at the Music Hall on the corner of Front and Cottage Streets.
The observances will commence with the raising of the flag, followed by the National Anthem, and a short ceremony. The parade will then proceed through the Village with ceremonies at Town Hall, Old Landing Cemetery, and Old Veterans Memorial Park. Light refreshments will be served at the end of the parade. In case of rain, all services will take place at Sippican School.
All veterans are invited to participate.
On Sunday, May 26, Rochester celebrates Memorial Day with a parade and service beginning at Noon in front of the Town Hall. The names of the deceased who died in combat will be read aloud.
